Sporting EventsAnnual Oak Island Surf-Off Saturday, September 05, 2009: (Ocean Crest Pier) The contest welcomes surfers and body-board riders of all ages and skill levels, from 8 years of age and older, with divisions for men, women, boys and girls. Division winners will be awarded fantastic prizes and keepsake trophies. The annual raffle is always a popular event. A fee is charged to participate. Trade ShowsLabor Day Art and Craft Fair Saturday, September 05, 2009: (Middleton Park Extension Soccer Field (46th SE Street & Dolphin Drive)) 19th Annual Labor Day weekend festival is a celebration of local and regional artists and craftspeople who display and sell their handmade goods within sight of the ocean. Proceeds from the festival are used toward scholarships for local high school students. Food will be sold. Admission is free. This event is sponsored by the Oak Island Art Guild. Trade Shows17th Annual Street of Shops - Fall Craft Bonanza Saturday, October 03, 2009: (Sacred Heart Catholic Church (Corner of NC 211 and Dosher Cut-Off)) Bazaar, benefits both in and out-reach programs, offers a wide range of hand made goods such as decorations, wood crafts, wreaths, elegant and practical gifts, hand-painted treasures, needlework, toys and baby items. Fishing TournamentsFall Brawl King Classic Friday, October 23, 2009: (Ocean Isle Fishing Center) The Fall Brawl King Classic brings fishermen and their families together for great food, fun and fishing. Entertainment is provided during the Capt. Meeting in the form of the Spot Derby and Cast Net throwing contest while great, food is served compliments of Fall Brawl sponsors and staff. The Fall Brawl is not only special for its attention to family involvment, it just so happens to be held when King Mackerel fishing is at its peak. Every year the tournament is won within sight of land, and on several occasions by boats less than 23 feet. It truly is a great time to fish area and why not join in the competition and give yourself a shot at winning a piece of the over $35,000 in prize money awarded. Theatre & Music EventsAre You Smarter than a Village Schooler? Sunday, November 15, 2009: (Odell Williamson Auditorium at Brunswick Community College) The ''Are You Smarter than a Village Schooler'' event brings together students from the Evelyn Smith Wray Village School and communiy leaders from Brunswick County. Contestants include Rex Gore, Sheriff John Ingram, Marty Cooke, Cindy Cheatham, Dr. Joanne Peck, Dr. Jeffrey Coury, Laura Thompson, Scott Harrell, Velva Jenkins, Debi Knox, Scott Kucera and Drayton Garrett. The VIP Reception and Sildent Auction begin at 4:30 p.m., the Show begins at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 for General Admission or $50 for VIP Admission. Proceeds benefit the ESW Village School, a non-profit education center. Fishing TournamentsCapt. Kyle's Thanksgiving Inshore Classic Friday, November 27, 2009: (Ocean Isle Fishing Center) This year we will keep the same format that we have had over the past coupe of years, with the winner being decided by the largest combined/aggregate weight of 3 speckled trout. We will pay back the top 5 places overall (5 largest 3 - trout aggregates), and will have two separate TWTs, one for the largest 3 - trout combined weight (Split between the 1st/2nd/3rd place finishers) and a TWT for the largest single trout (Also split between the 1st/2nd/3rd place finishers). Basic entry for the tournament will be $100, and the entry for the TWTs will be $50 each. 100% of all entries will be payed back to the winners (both overall and TWTs). Registration will be from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 27th, and fishing will be from 6:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Saturday, November 28th. Awards will be directly following weigh - in at 5:00 p.m.
